Sandal library re-opens following refurbishment works

Date: 11/03/2015

We will reopen Sandal Library next week (16 March) – the 9th in the district to be rebuilt as a part of the ongoing £1.1m libraries review programme.

The library has been designed in partnership with The Alzheimer's Society and is believed to be the first fully dementia friendly library in the country.

Cllr Les Shaw, Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Sport said: "I'm thrilled that refurbishment works are now complete at Sandal library which will open next week.

"I'm particularly pleased that we have been able to work with the Alzheimer's Society to include a number of design elements in the library which will help people who are living with dementia.

"I look forward to welcoming people to come and see what we have on offer."

The facility has been designed for people of all ages with modern facilities, including an all new children's area, a range of books for all ages, as well as installation of high speed broadband access and new computers.

Following research, the library also has specific features for people with dementia. This includes the colour scheme which is deep red - a warm, friendly and calming, furniture such as chairs and sofas which have a plain design and are easy to get in and out of, reduction of reflective surfaces, grey skirting boards and door frames making it easier for people to recognise them against the magnolia coloured walls, as well as signage and guiding with to help people recognise symbols and words.

The centre piece of the new facility is the lounge which is situated in the old entrance. It has been refurbished into a reminiscence room, with sofas and a flat screen TV which will play a slideshow of digitised images from the local history collection. This will help to stimulate dementia patients' long term memory. Once the library is open it will also hold regular reminiscence sessions, which will be advertised locally.

The library, which took ten weeks to complete, is open Monday 9am-6pm, Tuesday 9am-5pm, Wednesday 9am-1pm, Friday 9am-5pm and Saturday 9am-1pm.
