We will begin work to improve Pontefract Museum next week.
Refurbishments will include new gallery lighting; a reconfiguration of the reception desk to extend the special exhibition space; and upgrades to the special exhibition gallery.
Cllr Les Shaw, Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Sport said: "This work will help to improve Pontefract Museum so that more people can enjoy all the events and exhibitions we have on offer.
"It is great we have received support from the Arts Council England to make this project possible. I look forward to seeing the improvements to the Museum soon."
The museum will be closed for two weeks from Monday 23 February to allow essential building and maintenance work to take place. It will re-open on Monday 9 March.
The Council is also encouraging people to come along to see new displays at the Museum. This includes a special exhibition 'The British Civil Wars' as well as displays on liquorice and Georgian cookery, all opening on 2 May.
