Council joins in Commonwealth celebrations

Wakefield is joining in international celebrations of The Commonwealth – along with countries like New Zealand, Jamaica and Sri Lanka.

Members of the public are invited to come along to County Hall on Monday 9 March at 10am to join the Mayor of Wakefield; Cllr Sandra Pickin who will read the Commonwealth Affirmation and raise the national flag, to mark Commonwealth day.

Cllr Sandra Pickin said: "It's exciting to be part of these celebrations which are taking place on an international scale.

"Commonwealth Day is all about bringing people together to celebrate the unity, diversity and the linkages of the modern Commonwealth. We will take great pride in flying the Commonwealth flag."

Last year saw more than 650 Commonwealth Flags raised in 38 Commonwealth countries. ​
