Pontefract Market scoops top award
Pontefract Market has scooped a top national award, for providing a high quality service to thousands of customers each week.
The market was named as the joint winner of the Best Small Indoor Market, by the National Association of British Markets.
The prestigious award recognises the best markets in the UK.
Pontefract Market, which attracts 30,000 visitors a week, has a business support programme in place to bring in and support new traders. And staff at the market have also been working with traders to help them utilise social media to advertise their businesses and products. As a result the market is very popular with traders and all of its units are occupied.
Cllr Denise Jeffery, Cabinet Member for Economic Growth and Skills, said: "Pontefract Market is an important part of the local economy and I'd like to congratulate everyone involved in this award.
"The staff have worked very hard to generate a positive environment at the market, and many new businesses now want to come into the market hall. We also get a lot of positive feedback from the local community, who value the market as a key part of the town centre retail offer."
The competition was judged on how successful the markets were in attracting new business, in being innovative, and in engaging with the local community.
