Residents and business people offered the chance to balance Council budget

Date: 09/12/2014

We are launching an interactive tool on its website to give residents and business people the opportunity to show how they would personally chose to balance the Council’s budget.

The Council has already made £23 million of savings this year and needs to make additional savings of £38 million in 2015/16 because Government cuts have changed the ways in which councils are funded.

An interactive web tool called 'You Choose' is on the Council's website which highlights the difficult choices that need to be made when making savings to budgets.

The results will be fed back to decision-makers, who ultimately have to implement tough choices on where to make savings.

Cllr Peter Box, Leader of Wakefield Council, said: "We have already made a lot of  budget cuts. We really do not want to reduce our services, but the Government has cut our funding so heavily that we have no choice.

"We now have to look again at the way in which we can reduce our costs and change the way we do things. Unfortunately, though, we are now at the point where we will have to stop providing some services in order to make savings and balance the books.

"There are some very difficult decisions to be made and as a Council we want to engage with residents and business people to find out what they think.

"The 'You Choose' application also demonstrates just how these tough these choices are to make."
