Parking in Council-owned car parks in Wakefield, Castleford and Pontefract, will be free after 3pm on the four Thursdays in the run-up to Christmas to encourage shoppers to come into the district.

The Council's on-street parking spaces and its own car parks, excluding Merchant Gate multi-storey in Wakefield, will be free from 3pm on Thursday starting next week , November 27, and continuing on December 4, December 11 and December 18.  Christmas Day and New Year's Day both fall on Thursdays and are Bank Holidays when parking is already free.

Cllr David Dagger, Cabinet Member for transportation and highways, said: "We have offered free Christmas parking in our car parks for some years now and we are confident that  it does encourage people to come into our shopping centres. We hope it will do the same this year and look forward to welcoming visitors."

Signs will be displayed on or next to parking payment machines to publicise the dates for free parking from 3pm.

Council-owned car parks can be found on www.wakefield.gov.uk/carparks

Please note that the free parking offer does not include privately-run car parks or Merchant Gate car park.
