The countdown to Christmas is well underway with only 8 days till the start of our fun festive events.

This year's activities include the return of the bigger and better synthetic Ice Skating Rink. Due to its popularity, the rink will be back for four weeks starting from Friday November 21 to Wednesday December 24 and open from 11am to 5pm Monday – Saturday (4pm Sunday).

The celebrations will also include Christmas markets with a selection of treats including hot street food overlooking the ice rink and festive drinks. The market will run over three weekends: Friday 21 November – Sunday 23 November, Friday 28 November – Sunday 30 November and Friday 5 December – Sunday 7 December. It will be open from 10am to 5pm Friday & Saturday (4pm Sunday).

Christmas lights switch ons kicks off in Wakefield at the Cathedral Precinct on Friday November 21 at 6pm. Other light switch ons in the district include Pontefract Market Place on Monday November 24 at 6.30pm and at Castleford Carlton Street on Tuesday November 25 at 5.30pm. The switch-on events in Castleford and Pontefract will also feature Christmas markets and a range of community entertainment.

Cllr Les Shaw, Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Sport said: "We are looking forward to celebrating the festivities with many events and activities taking place throughout the district, there is something for everyone.

"So whether you want to get on your skates and come down for a spin at the Ice Skating Rink, pick up some unique last minute gifts at the Christmas market, or fancy getting in the mood for Christmas with our light switch ons - make sure you get the dates in your diaries - to have a great time celebrating this festive period."

Ice skating sessions will run for 30 minutes costing £2. Hot food and drinks will be available overlooking the ice rink along with festive drinks. Tickets can be purchased from Wakefield Visitor Centre when it's open and from ice rink staff outside these hours.
