It’s two years since the £5m centre based in Castleford opened its doors at the end of September in 2012. During 2013/14 Wakefield Youth Services had almost 35,000 contacts with young people in the district.
The whole project aims to bring young people from the Wakefield district together in this world-class centre, as well as providing a resource for the wider community. The Hut team will also work in close partnership with schools to provide learning opportunities.
The Council bid for the funding from the Government’s national Myplace programme administered by the Big Lottery. It was put together in partnership with Wakefield Council and the Chrysalis Youth and Community Project. Young people helped write the funding bid, work with architects to design the centre, chose the furniture and worked out how the centre can be used to meet the needs of other young people and the wider community.
The Hut’s facilities include a four lane ten pin bowling alley, sports and performance hall, games room, cinema, a cyber café, and radio station (5 Towns FM). Along with a multi-use games area, Adizone outdoor gym and a floodlit all weather pitch.
The Council’s Positive Activity Team are be based at The Hut. The team provides youth clubs and street based youth work across the district. The team also works with voluntary groups to promote and increase the range of clubs and activities for young people across the Wakefield district.
