Castleford Swimming Pool reopens after flooding

Castleford swimming pool reopens today (Tuesday) after being closed for more than a week because of flooding.

Wakefield Council staff reported water being thigh deep as localised flooding hit homes and businesses across Castleford and Pontefract on Friday 8 August.

It's estimated that tens of thousands of litres of contaminated flood water swept into the pool building, and it took days to pump it all out.

The flooding mainly affected the pool's plant room which contains much of the equipment critical to operate the pool, but some flood water also got into the swimming pool itself. The pool has since had several changes of water and independent tests completed to confirm it is safe for use once again.

Cllr Les Shaw, the council's cabinet member for Culture, Leisure and Sport, said: "Flood water doesn't discriminate and like many people across the district Castleford swimming pool was affected.

"Due to the amazing efforts and dedication of staff we've been able to get it open again pretty quickly and are looking forward to welcoming people back to the various swimming sessions on offer this week."
