Thousands pack into Ponte for a real sweet treat
Ref: PR 4644
Pontefract Liquorice Festival was a sweet success at the weekend as thousands flocked to the annual festival.
Over 35,000 people descended on Pontefract town centre on Sunday (July 13) to see it transformed into a sweet lover's dream, full of food and drinks stalls, entertainment, workshops and informative talks.
Lucy Liquorice welcomed visitors to the festival, which included face painting, puppet crafts and sweetie making. This year children also took part in a lemon sherbet making experiment.
Cllr Les Shaw, Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Sport, said: "Every year the Liquorice Festival does not disappoint – with guaranteed family fun and entertainment. It continues to be a hugely popular event with visitors travelling far and wide to celebrate this unique festival with us.
"With the weather on our side for the weekend, the events at Pontefract Castle were also a big hit. Thousands of visitors joined in the Picnic in the Castle and 1,300 people watching our spectacular Proms in the evening. We hope everyone had an enjoyable weekend."
The Pontefract Liquorice Festival is believed to be the only event in the world to celebrate this unusual plant and the many wonderful products created from it and Pontefract is rightly proud to celebrate its historic association with this famous plant from the Middle East.
