Council encourages residents to move more often

Ref: PR 4642
Date: 14/07/2014

We are encouraging residents to have fun, increase their physical activity and feel good over the summer months.

Our 'move more' campaign will work to improve figures showing Wakefield to be one of the least active cities in West Yorkshire with 28.7% of people being active for 30 minutes once a week compared to the regional average of 37.4%.

Cllr Pat Garbutt, Cabinet member for Adults and Health, said: "These figures are concerning but we are working to encourage residents to build extra physical activities into their daily routines.

"Many people think physical activity has to be straining like going to the gym – but it can be a whole host of different and fun activities from dancing, gardening, going to the park and evening cleaning the house. And with the summer holidays approaching now really is the perfect time for parents to get the whole family involved.

"I urge everybody across the district to get active and have fun this summer."

The initiative will aim to help residents in the district increase their physical activity with energetic and fun activities. Various activities are taking place this summer in sport centres.
