A new chocolate company is set to taste success after receiving expert help from our business support programme.

Keen to start a chocolate-making business – the Old Chocolate Tree - from their home in Upton, Donna and her husband Andrew Hill contacted one of the programme's business support advisors.

Donna said: "The programme was very helpful – we had our own advisor who opened our minds to extra things which we weren't aware of. We received all sorts of help from finance, planning and even publicity.

"We can't thank our advisor enough – he's been brilliant and I would urge anybody who wishes to explore an idea or hobby to speak to one of the advisors – it will definitely be a great help to build your dream business."

Wakefield Council Leader, Cllr Peter Box, said: "Across the district we've seen business confidence improve considerably and start-up rates have risen in the last 12 months. This is a testament to the success of the Wakefield Business Support Programme."

Recently at Wakefield Business Week – entrepreneurs old and new came together to share aspirations, experiences and future expectations of doing business in the district.

The event also highlighted the success of the Wakefield business support programme as a catalyst enabling entrepreneurs to get into business. During the week more than 1,000 people attended a variety of events.

Cllr Peter Box said: "It was a great success - year on year this event helps to open more doors for our districts business – it's a key driving force to partnership working between the private and public sector."

The Wakefield business support programme was officially launched last September by Wakefield Council in partnership with RCP21, South Elmsall Town Council and South Kirby and Moorthorpe Town Council with part funding from the European Regional Development Fund.

The scheme aims to help businesses become established, grow, enter new sustainable markets and create new jobs. It offers a range of free support including business planning advice, access to funding and networking opportunities.
