Council welcomes Yorkshire Regiment

The Yorkshire Regiment, 3rd Battalion The Rifles – granted the Freedom of the City of Wakefield in 2010 - will be exercising their right to parade through Wakefield on Saturday, July 12.

The troop of 200 serving military will start their parade at the Elizabethan Gallery on Brook Street Wakefield, leaving at 10.55am and parade through the City. The troop will arrive at the Cathedral West Door at 11am for approximately 20 minutes for speeches and an inspection of the troops at the saluting dais with the Mayor of Wakefield, Cllr Sandra Pickin.

Cllr Peter Box CBE, Leader of the Council, said: "It is a great honour to welcome the Yorkshire Regiment 3rd Battalion The Rifles to Wakefield where they have the honour of the Freedom of the City.

"The parade is our opportunity to honour and celebrate our British servicemen and women who are serving all over the world on behalf of their country. This occasion is also a time to remember those who have died or have been injured in the line of duty."

Mayor of Wakefield, Cllr Sandra Pickin added: "I encourage residents to come along and line the streets to give the troops a warm Wakefield welcome and show their support."

The parade route in detail:

Parade will leave The Elizabethan Gallery, Brook Street, Wakefield at 10.55am
Parade along Brook Street
Turn right onto Westmoreland Street
Turn left onto the Bull Ring and halt at the Cathedral West Door
Turn and leave the Cathedral West Door and parade down the precinct towards Kirkgate
Turn left onto Kirkgate
Turn left up Westmoreland Street
Turn left at the Bull Ring and pass the Cathedral West Door
Turn right up Little Westgate
Turn right onto Marygate
Turn right back onto Westmoreland Street
Turn left onto Brook Street and back to the Elizabethan Gallery.

Roads will be temporarily closed to accommodate the march.
