Armed Forces Day Competition
Wakefield Council is reminding young people of their final chance to take part in this year's Armed Forces day competition as the deadline nears.
Children are being challenged to create a story board demonstrating a story of someone who has either fought or was involved in World War One (WW1) – with a chance of winning Amazon vouchers. The competition for children aged between 4-15 closes on Monday June 9.
Entries will be judged in three age categories - 4-8 years, 9-12 years and 13-16 years, with two winners in each category. The first prize will consist of £50 Amazon voucher whilst the runner-up will receive a £10 Amazon voucher. The winners will also have their stories recorded and broadcast by the National Trust as part of their Red Poppies and White Butterflies WW1 project.
Cllr Sandra Pickin, Armed Forces Champion for the district, said: "This competition is a wonderful way for children to celebrate and honour those who have fought to protect our country and are still serving. We urge everybody to get creative and send their storyboards through – and of course they can win prizes as well."
Templates for the storyboard can be downloaded from www.wakefield.gov.uk/armedforces Children can also create their own storyboard but must include the following details:
• Their name and age
• The name of the person the storyboard is about
• How old this person was at the start of the war
• What their relationship was to the child
• What their job was during the war and the location they did it.
Entries must be sent to: Armed Forces Day competition, Room 203, County Hall, Freepost NEA5394, Wakefield, WF1 2QL.
Winners will be contacted on Friday June 13 and presented with their prize at the Armed Forces Day event at Nostell Priory and Parkland on Sunday June 22 by Lord St Oswold.
