Cllr Sandra Pickin will take the Chains of Office as the Mayor of the district for 2014/15 with her daughter, Samantha Buet taking the role of Mayoress. Cllr June Cliffe will be the Deputy Mayor.
They will take over the office from Cllr Janet Holmes who took over in November when the previous Mayor, Cllr Brian Holmes, passed away.
Cllr Pickin was due to be Deputy Mayor for the next year, but plans needed to be changed following last week’s district elections when Cllr Laurie Harrison was not re-elected. Cllr Harrison had been due to be Mayor next year.
Cllr Pickin was first elected to serve the Hemsworth Ward in 2010 where she has lived all her life with her two daughters. She was re-elected in last week’s elections. She is a governor at Hemsworth Arts and Community Academy and is also proud to be the Council’s Armed Forces Champion. She works both locally as a Royal British Legion Branch secretary and at a district-wide level to support serving and veteran members of the Armed Forces and their families.
The formal Mayor-Making Ceremony will take place in the Council Chamber, County Hall, on Wednesday June 11.
The Council’s Chief Executive Joanne Roney OBE, acting as Proper Officer, witnesses the signing-in ceremonies in front of full Council and specially-invited guests.
Council Leader Cllr Peter Box CBE said: "I am sure that Sandra and June will head up a very effective civic team and I wish them both well in their year of office.
“But I am also saddened that Laurie wasn’t re-elected last week, and wish to thank him for all his hard work as a long serving councillor for the Wakefield district.”
Cllr Pickin has chosen the Families’ Activity Breaks (FAB) for her charity appeal 2014/15. FAB provide fun and challenging activity holidays around the UK for bereaved military families.
Cllr Sandra Pickin said: “I am honoured to serve the district and its people this year and I am very much looking forward to working with Families’ Activity Breaks to provide much needed support for bereaved military families.”
