Get fit with Wakefield Council
Ref: PR 4546
Wakefield Council is stepping up its Sporty Mates programme in the coming month.
Funded by Sport England, Sporty Mates aims to help Wakefield men aged between 30- 50 lead healthier lifestyles by holding a number of different social sport sessions across the district.
Anyone can turn up and play in these free, social sport sessions, the activities include rugby, swimming, golf, football, boxercise, walking and cycling.
Cllr David Dagger Cabinet Member for Sport, said: "The first set of sessions we held were very successful, with a total of 43 local men taking part in our touch rugby events supported by Featherstone Rovers, Castleford Tigers and Wakefield Wildcats."
Throughout May more sessions will be taking place at different venues in the district. These are a good opportunity to meet other people who enjoy sports as well as improving fitness levels.
The sessions are for beginners or returners to sport or for men who just fancy playing some sport for fun.
Current sessions include the Football Association supported 'Just Play' five-a-side football, which are ideal for people who haven't kicked a ball in years or want to get back involved with the game. These take place at three locations:
Hemsworth Sports Centre - Tuesday nights 6pm-7pm
The Hut, Castleford - Friday nights 6pm-7pm
Wakefield City Academy - Wednesday nights 6pm-7pm
