Wakefield Council progresses changes in service delivery

Date: 15/04/2014
Ref: PR 4541

Wakefield Council has announced a short-list of five potential partners for delivering its property, buildings and facilities services, including cleaning and catering.

These are:
• AMEY Community Limited
• Carillion (AMBS) Ltd
• Cofely Workplace Ltd
• Interserve (Facilities management) Ltd
• Mitie Facilities Services Ltd

The Council is looking at different ways of delivering its services to make savings of £185m by 2019/20 due to cuts in the funding the Council receives from Government.

The Council has already saved £58m over the last 3 years and has agreed a further £61m of cuts by 2015, with more expected over the rest of the decade.

The Council's Cabinet member for transformation, Cllr Les Shaw, said: "Savings on this scale mean that we have to change the way the Council works while still being committed to providing quality services and protecting jobs.

"We have now short-listed five companies as prospective partners to work with us to provide a group of our core infrastructure services, with the intention that this will keep jobs in the district with more security than the Council can currently provide.

"We want to have a new service up and running by summer 2015. I am very pleased with the response to the initial part of the tendering exercise and the high calibre of the companies who want to work with us.

"We will now be embarking on a competitive dialogue process with those short listed companies, prior to selecting the successful partner.

Services included in the proposal to find an external partner are building services, facilities management, property and asset management, building cleaning, school meals and buildings related architectural design and related services.

Cllr Shaw emphasised that all these services would continue to be provided, though not directly by the Council.
