Temporary closure of Sun Lane pool for repairs
Ref: PR 4518
The swimming pools at Sun Lane Leisure Centre in Wakefield will be closed over the Easter break for repair work.
A leak associated with the pool side drainage means the pools will be closed from Saturday 12 April and will re-open on Saturday 26 April. The gym and all the other dry side facilities will remain open during this period.
The problem is believed to have been caused by a defect to a drainage channel used during construction. Contractors have been working during the night to try and fix the leak, but further work needs to be done, so the pool will need to close.
Cllr David Dagger, Cabinet Member for Culture, Sport and Libraries, said: "There really is no good time to close a popular swimming pool and we apologise to customers for the inconvenience.
"Issues like this are not uncommon especially in large building projects and although it is not a major problem we have to close the pool to enable it to be fixed.
"The work needs to be done quickly to ensure further damage isn't caused. With this in mind we carried out detailed analysis to identify when we could close the pool with least disruption. This showed that closing during a school holiday will have a lesser impact on customers than closing during term time.
"There are other pools in the district which are open in the Easter holidays, so people can still enjoy swimming activities. It is business as usual for the rest of the facilities at Sun Lane Leisure enabling people to continue using the gym and all the other dry side facilities."
The full cost of the repair work is being covered by the contractor, Willmott Dixon, who is also reimbursing the Council for any lost income. This is normal practice in a building project of this size.
Cllr Dagger added: "Our contractors are fully committed to resolving this as quickly as possible and will be working throughout the entire Easter period including at night."
The swimming and fitness centre at Sun Lane was opened in 2012. The centre is fully accessible for people with disabilities and includes a Changing Places facility for people with profound and multiple learning disabilities, as well as other serious impairments including spinal or brain injuries. This changing facility is available for anyone visiting the city and not just users of the facility.
