Council Leader responds to Chancellor's spending plans
Cllr Peter Box CBE, Leader of Wakefield Council, has responded to Chancellor Sajid Javid's spending review by saying it appears to fall significantly short of what is needed.
"We will need to look at the Chancellor's announcement in more detail and understand what it means for the Wakefield district but, initially, it appears to provide little comfort for local authorities.
"Although the chancellor's announcement to increase day to day spending on public services, especially in social care, is welcomed, it still falls significantly short of what is needed.
"The impact on the services we provide has been unavoidable and this extra money will barely scratch the surface of restoring previous cuts. It still does not meet the spending we had available before 2010.
"The Government may think they are turning the page on austerity but I'm afraid it is certainly not over for local authorities like us."
