Major investment at Featherstone Sports Centre to be discussed
Plans to invest £850,000 to upgrade Featherstone Sports Centre are to be discussed by senior Wakefield councillors next week.
Members of the Cabinet will be asked to give the green light to improvements including modernising and expanding the number of fitness stations in the gym, creating much needed space for health referrals and more modern fitness training techniques, better access to outdoor space and adding new parking spaces for people with disabilities.
The proposed investment which aims to expand facilities to give opportunities for more people to be active and to boost their health, will be discussed by Cabinet members on Tuesday 10 September.
Cllr Jacquie Speight, Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Sport at Wakefield Council, said: "We want to support the community to be more active and live healthier lives. Featherstone Sports Centre is popular and we'll be discussing the proposed investment and how this could enhance and modernise the gym so that more people can use and enjoy the facilities now and in the future. "
The investment could help to support initiatives to help 'hard to reach groups' such as to encourage more girls and young women to continue to be active as research shows during teenage years, girls activity levels can drop off.
It could also enable a confidential area for health referrals to be created that would support people needing additional help and advice to reap the health benefits of regular exercise.
A report to councillors says that as Featherstone is seeing an increase in new housing, and with the additional investment and improved facilities the sports centre could benefit from more new members looking for good quality and affordable leisure facilities.
The report will be discussed at Cabinet on 10 September from 10.30am at Castleford Civic Centre. You can watch the meeting live or later at www.wakefield.gov.uk/livestream
