Wakefield Libraries are celebrating more children than ever taking part in their Summer Reading Challenge this year.

Over the course of the school holidays, there has been a 15 per cent increase in children taking part in the challenge, which encourages youngsters to read six library books during the summer holiday period.

The hard work of the libraries team to promote the challenge on social media has received national recognition and now UK-wide charity The Reading Agency, who produce the annual Reading Challenge, want them to take over their Instagram account for a couple of days.

Space Chase Summer Reading Challenge 2019 has been inspired by the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing and the libraries have linked up with the Festival of the Moon, which Wakefield is hosting in just a few weeks' time, to offer a special VIP experience for children who complete the Reading Challenge.

Cllr Jacquie Speight, Wakefield Council's Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Sport, said: "I'd like to congratulate everyone at Wakefield Libraries for all their hard work. The opportunity to take over The Reading Agency's account and showcase our work nationally is just rewards for the dedication of our staff.

"The Summer Reading Challenge is a great way of keeping the kids busy over the summer holidays and is encouraging children to visit their local libraries.

"I can't wait to see what the team can achieve through this opportunity."

Wakefield Libraries will take over The Reading Agency's account on Monday 19 August until Wednesday 21 August. Please look out for their posts at https://www.instagram.com/readingagency/
