Wakefield Council to hold Build Our Futures Summit

07/05/2019, PR-9047

A young man from West Yorkshire who went through care, prison and social rejection to become a youth justice specialist, is headlining a young people's summit to be held in Wakefield.

Andy Brierley tells the story of how he beat the odds and turned his life around after a traumatic childhood in his book 'Your Honour, Can I tell You My Story'.

Young people from across the district are being invited not only to hear from him but also to talk about the issues which are facing their generation in Wakefield and how the local authority and their partners can help to shape a future that is right for them.

The event, Build Our Futures Children and Young People Summit, is happening on Saturday 11 May from 10.30am to 3pm at Unity Hall and is open to young people aged 11 to 19.

It's their opportunity for their voices to be heard on issues that matter most to them which will inform Wakefield Council's Children & Young People's Plan.

Beate Wagner, Corporate Director for Children and Young People, said: "Wakefield's young people are a credit to our district and we believe that all children and young people should feel safe, supported and fulfilled in order to achieve their full potential.

"It is important that we take opportunities like these to engage and consult with our young people so that our priorities as a Council reflect their needs and those of their families."

National Children's Day UK (12 May), of which this event is a part, is all about the importance of a healthy childhood and the need to protect the rights and freedoms of children in order to ensure that they can grow into happy, healthy adults.

There are activities, other speakers, a raffle, Magic Mirror and popcorn machine. The event is free and lunch is provided. Places can be booked at Wakefield.gov.uk/Summit

Adults and carers are also welcome to come along.
