Thornes Park Stadium closed for elections
Thornes Park Athletics Stadium in Wakefield will be temporarily closed over three days – to host the counting of votes for the Parliamentary, district council and town and parish council elections, which take place on May 7 and May 8.
Customers will be able to use the fitness studios until 10.30am on Wednesday May 6, but the main hall will be closed all day. From 11am, the entire stadium will be closed until Saturday May 9 at 8.30am.
Aspire Fitness Scheme members can use Sun Lane Leisure Centre or any other council run leisure facilities.
Bernadette Livesey, Deputy Returning Officer and Service Director Legal and Governance at Wakefield Council, said: "We apologise for any inconvenience and the stadium will reopen on May 9."
The counting of the votes is not open to the public
The stadium car park will also be closed to the public all day. The closure will be supervised by security staff and entry to the car park will be by permit only.
Alternative parking facilities are available either off Thornes Road next to the duck pond or on Denby Dale Road, off the roundabout.
The results of the elections will be available on the Council's website.
Additionally, people are being reminded the Stadium will also be closed on bank holiday Monday, May 4.
