New farmers' market for Pontefract
Ref: PR2664
Date: 05/07/2010
A new farmers and local produce market will be held in Pontefract for the first time next week.
The market, which will be on Market Place in the town centre, is a new venture for Wakefield Council. It will be held on Friday July 16 and then the third Friday of each month after that.
Cllr David Dagger, Portfolio holder for Culture, Sport and Libraries, said: “As a Council we aim to provide more people with good access to local, fresh, affordable and sustainable food and this is one way of doing it.
We had a specialist food market on a Friday and Saturday in the run up to Christmas and that was very successful so clearly there is a demand for this type of food in the Pontefract area. I hope that people will come along and support the new market and that it rapidly becomes a regular feature of the town.”
Wakefield Council also runs farmers and local produce markets in Wakefield on the second Saturday of the month and in Ossett on the fourth Saturday of each month.
