Doubles team promotes tennis at Wimble Day
Ref: PR 2254
Date: 24/06/2009
An ace new scheme has been served up to promote tennis in Wakefield district.
A doubles partnership between Wakefield Council and West Yorkshire Sport to support local community sports clubs has been formed, with Wimble Day the next big event.
With 2009’s Wimbledon Championships already under way, Wimble Day is about raising awareness of Wakefield Tennis Club as well as raising money for the Marie Curie charity.
Cllr Denise Jeffery, Wakefield Council’s deputy leader and cabinet member for sport, said: “So much will be going on at this exciting free event. It’s a great way to meet people, play a little sport and support a great charity.
“We are always looking for ways to promote healthy and active lifestyles and support our local clubs and this smashing event brings the two together perfectly this summer.”
David Burton, Wakefield Tennis Club, added: “The help and enthusiasm of the project is fabulous and we can already see the benefits for our club from working with our club support assistant. The Wimble Day event is something the whole of Wakefield Tennis Club is very excited about. It is going to be a great day.”
The fun, friendly and free Wimble Day is on Sunday June 28, from 10am to 3pm at Wakefield Girl’s High School Playing Grounds on Blenheim Road, just off Northgate.
The event will include BBQs, fun games, social tournaments and free Lawn Tennis Association coaching to encourage both juniors and adults to get involved.
