Eco-friendly system for new combined sports pavilion

Ref:PR2185
Date: 06/04/09

A state-of-the-art eco-friendly system has been installed as work begins on the new Wakefield Council-funded multi-use sports pavilion in the city.

As part of the build, a new underground irrigation system has been installed at the City of Wakefield Golf Course which will save thousands of litres of water over the coming years - as well as reduce the Council's water utility bills.

The system features two fibre glass water tanks with a capacity of 150 cubic meters which is installed below ground to store water for the irrigation of the golf course.

The tanks will be filled with rain water supplied from the roof's special gutters. A new plant room located inside the building will house the irrigation control, pumps and new UV water treatment equipment. There is also the option of mains water top-up if required.

Cllr Denise Jeffery, Wakefield Council's deputy leader and cabinet member for regeneration, said: "This is a fantastic design feature which saves money and water.

"More people are waking up to the fact that we should be as eco-friendly as possible. So when it comes to creating high quality new Council facilities, we are doing our best to try and build in features like these wherever possible."

The new Council sports pavilion was granted planning permission last month.

The existing parks pavilion on site has been demolished in readiness for the creation of the new building this summer, which is part of Wakefield Council's commitment to creating healthier communities and encouraging more active lifestyles.

The City of Wakefield Golf Club, Azaad Cricket Club, Old Thornesians AFC and St Ignatius AFC will use the state-of-the-art building as their base.
