Roadworks ban on 100 roads for Christmas
Ref: PR1994
Date: 04/11/08
Roadworks are to be banned again from 100 of Wakefield District's main shopping streets and busiest roads in the Christmas and New Year period.
The measures were first introduced a few years ago to reduce disruption and have proved to be popular so Wakefield Council has decided to halt their own roadworks and those of utility companies during the festive period.
The 100 roads in Wakefield city centre, the five towns and major retail parks will remain roadwork free from 17 November 2008 until 5 January 2009. The only exceptions will be any essential emergency repairs and the current redevelopment work that is taking place around the city centre such as Trinity Walk and the Waterfront.
Cllr Denise Jeffery, Cabinet Member responsible for Regeneration, said: "The roadwork ban has been very popular in previous years so we have decided to bring it in again. The move is a bid to reduce traffic jams and disruption on the road network during the year's busiest period."
The 100 roads covered by the ban are in Castleford, Hemsworth, Horbury, Normanton, Ossett, Pontefract, South Elmsall and Wakefield. To view a full list please see 'Downloads'
Although most roadworks will not take place during this time, please be aware that necessary emergency works will still have to be carried out from time to time.
