The Olympics come early

Ref: PR1474
Date: 13/08/2007

The Olympics are coming to the district early with a roadshow to encourage getting active on Sunday (August 19).

And silver Olympic medallist diver Leon Taylor will be on hand to give advice to budding sportsmen and women.

Wakefield Council's Sport and Active Lifestyles, supported by the Wakefield District Community Sports Network, is hosting the 2012 Olympic Road Show in partnership with Xscape, Sport England, West Yorkshire Sport and Yorkshire Culture.

It is part of a national campaign to encourage taking part in physical activity and introduce sport across the country.

There will be a road show bus to provide information and there is a range of events including a fun athletics competition, health checks, windsurfing simulator, golf accuracy competition, and displays by the Wakefield Gym Club, with a demonstration of Aerobiking provided by Thornes Stadium employees.

The event is at Castleford's Xscape between 11am and 5pm.

For more summer holiday fun there is plenty to do across the district including Street Dance at Freeston Leisure Centre, Freeston High School, Normanton between 20 and 22 August, 2-3pm for five-16 year-olds.

There is also the Power Hour, a fitness session in the gym at Freeston Leisure Centre between 1pm - 2pm every Wednesday throughout the holiday period for 12-16 year-olds.

Golf tuition is available for everyone throughout the year at Wakefield Golf Course - phone 01924 360282 for more information.

There are organised fun sessions at all of the Council run swimming pools. Contact your nearest pool for more information on the Splash Zone Fun Sessions.

Tae Kwon Do is another good way to keep fit and learn practical self-defence. Sessions are running at Thornes Park Stadium on 23 and 30 August from 1.30pm to 3pm. It costs £3 and is for six to 12-year-olds - advanced booking is essential.
