Wakefield Council’s campaign to keep The Ackworth Hoard in the district has been boosted by a donation from the Friends of Wakefield Art Galleries and Museums.
The Council is appealing to the public to help raise funds to buy The Ackworth Hoard for future display in Pontefract Museum.
The donation of £513.50 from the friends group is a boost to reaching the £5,500 needed locally to secure the treasure for the district. This brings the total raised so far to £838.50.
Cllr David Dagger, Cabinet Member for Culture said: “Thank you to the Friends of Wakefield Art Galleries and Museums for their kind donation. This is another step closer to keeping this important find in the district.
“These items are a real part of this district's rich history. We need to do all we can to try and keep the treasure in the district for future generations to enjoy. Every donation however big or small will help save the items for Yorkshire.”
The Council expects to secure approximately £49,000 toward the cost of the Hoard from national funders with the remaining amount of approximately £5,500 to be raised through public donation and Council support.
The Ackworth Hoard was found buried in a garden in Ackworth last year inside a pot made locally in Wrenthorpe. It dates from the Civil War and was probably buried between 1645 and 1646, around the same time as the second siege of Pontefract Castle.
The hoard is made up from gold and silver coins and a single gold ring inscribed with the words “When this you see, remember me”.
To make a donation in person please ask for a donation envelope at Pontefract Museum, Pontefract Castle, Sandal Castle, Wakefield Tourist Information Centre or any Wakefield district library.
Or to make a donation by post please make a cheque payable to Wakefield Council – The Ackworth Hoard, and send it to Pontefract Museum, 5 Salter Row, Pontefract, WF8 1BA.
If more money is raised than needed the surplus will be used to help pay for its conservation and display at Pontefract Museum. If enough isn’t raised to acquire the Hoard, donations will be used for the development and care of the collections at Pontefract Museum.
