Waving the banner for Pontefract Castle

Ref: PR 3099
Date: 20/07/2011

Banners to promote Pontefract castle will be popping up in Pontefract this week.

Six banners will be placed in Horsefair, in a bid to attract and direct visitors towards the castle.

The castle, which attracts over 30,000 people per year, was built by Ilbert de Lacy in the 1080s and eventually passed into the Duchy of Lancaster estate. Many of the nations Kings and Queens have visited the castle, most famously was Richard II, who lost his life in mysterious circumstances there.

The banners include the Duchy of Lancaster’s shield, the red rose of Lancashire and the iconic white rose of Yorkshire.

Cllr David Dagger, Wakefield Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, said: “We are keen to promote Pontefract as a tourist destination, these banners will help to promote the town’s biggest asset, the castle and hopefully boost visitor numbers. The banners will also help to build firm links between Pontefract town centre and the castle”.

The banners will be up from July 22 and will be placed between the bus station and Micklegate Square.
