Save the Date – festival of culture comes to Wakefield

Ref: PR226
Date: 08/07/2009

Wakefield district is looking forward to a festival of culture this July as we celebrate the Save the Date event ahead of the London 2012 Olympics.

Saturday, July 25, will see a series of London 2012 Save the Date events swing into action nationally to celebrate art, culture, sport, and everything that makes up the games.

Wakefield’s Save the Date event, running from 10am until 4pm, will be held in the city centre’s cathedral precinct where exciting activities will include live entertainment, professional and community performers, dance displays and audience participation games.

People will also have the chance to contribute to sculpture and arts activities as well as taking part in mini-sports, a windsurfing simulator and Olympic-style games.

Cllr Denise Jeffery, Wakefield Council’s deputy leader and cabinet member for sport, said: “This event will invite people from right across the district to try out new activities. It’s about getting a taste of the wonderful cultural activities that are on offer – and even trying something new.

“The London Olympics are not far away and hopefully they will act as a catalyst to get even more people to enjoy sport and healthy activity in our district at our ever-improving sports facilities.”

The national event also ran last year when around 700,000 people enjoyed 655 events across the country.

Wakefield’s Save the Date event feeds into the opening of the new adiZone on July 27. adiZone Wakefield is the first venue outside of London to get a state-of-the-art outdoor gym as part of the run-up to the London 2012 Olympics and is being built at Hemsworth Arts and Community College.
