Major new investment in gyms in Wakefield

Ref: PR2253
Date: 24/06/2009

Half a million pounds is being invested by Wakefield Council in new gym equipment and sports centre refurbishments.

New state-of-the-art Lifefitness gym equipment forms part of a major overhaul of suites at Lightwaves Leisure Centre and Thornes Park Athletics Stadium.

Cllr Denise Jeffery, Wakefield Council’s deputy leader and cabinet member for sport, said: “People have asked for more investment in sporting facilities and we have listened and acted.

“We are working towards creating healthier communities so people can stay fit for life.

“This major investment forms part of that work and means more people can take part in affordable exercise. We are now looking at making more investments in other centres across the district.”

At Lightwaves, the Aspire gym will be moved to the first floor and will overlook the pool. As a result, there soon be 32 fitness stations which will also include integrated entertainment.

At Thornes Park, the Aspire gym will have 70 fitness stations along with a media zone and a performance area for athletes. There will be a temporary gym provision within the sport hall throughout August with the opening date of September 1.

At Lightwaves the new equipment is due to be installed from July 13 and ready for opening at the end of July.

The Council is now hoping to upgrade the Aspire gym at Knottingley later this winter.

All these new facilities are included in Wakefield council’s Aspire membership, which means members can make unlimited access to Council sports facilities for just £25 per month.
