Flying the flag for armed forces
Ref: PR2241
Date: 10/06/2009
A special flag will be raised at town hall as Wakefield Council shows its support for the British armed forces.
The flag-raising will mark the start of Armed Forces Week, culminating with Armed Forces Day on June 27.
The day is an opportunity for the whole nation to show its appreciation for the contribution made by all those who serve or have served in Her Majesty’s armed forces.
Mayor of Wakefield, Cllr Heather Hudson, said: "We will be flying the flag with pride in support of troops who have been risking their lives so others can live freely and have a democratic say in the way their country is run.
"Our troops provide vital humanitarian support around the world, helping those most in need. They risk their lives so others can have one and that is why we are recognising their efforts by flying this flag."
The Mayor of Wakefield will be attending The Royal British Legion’s (South & West Yorkshire) County Branch Annual Parade & Service on Sunday, June 21 on behalf of the Council to raise the flag.
