Sandal Castle, Wakefield Museum and Clarke Hall are all offering the rare opportunity to visit them in the evening and enjoy what they have to offer during the annual Museums at Night event in May.
The aim of the campaign is to attract people into museums who don't usually visit, simply by staying open late or by creating special events. It will link up with the European wide campaign of the same name (La Nuit de Musées), which takes place on Saturday 16 May.
Cllr Denise Jeffery, Deputy Leader of Wakefield Council with responsibility for culture and tourism, said: "I am really pleased that we are taking part in this campaign. We have so much to offer in our museums and the more we can do to attract visitors, the better.
"I hope people will come along and enjoy this special weekend of activities."
Wakefield district's weekend begins with an invitation to come and dance at a free event at Sandal Castle, which will host a special evening of medieval music.
Historical musicians Hautbois will entertain audiences with late medieval music performed in their stunning hand pulled cart. Sandal Castle's visitor centre will also be open to allow people to explore the history of the castle.
Although the event on Friday 15 May from 6.30pm until 8.30pm is free, booking is essential. To book call 01977 722744. All children must be accompanied by an adult.
Wakefield Museum will be open for its Museums at Night event, based on its Toy Stories exhibition, until 8pm on Saturday 16 May.
As well as enjoying the museum's current exhibitions, visitors are invited to take along their teddies for a teddy bears' picnic, take part in a computer games competition and join in outdoor games such as hula hoop in nearby Crown Courtyard.
This free event is suitable for all the family and no booking is necessary.
Candlelit tales and a candle decorating workshop are on offer at Clarke Hall at 8pm on Saturday May 16.
Costumed guides will relate tales in the atmospheric and historic setting of the 17th century hall.
This relaxed and entertaining evening is suitable for families with children aged seven and over. It is free but booking is essential - please phone 01977 722744.
