Olympic mascot visits Hemsworth adiZone
Date: 14/07/2010
Pupils from Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School met the Olympic mascot Wenlock at Hemsworth’s adiZone on Monday (12 July).
Wenlock joined the 30 pupils to take part in a basketball competition, contemporary dance class and fitness sessions run by Wakefield Council.
The 2012 Olympic mascot made a surprise first visit to Yorkshire and the young people were delighted that Wenlock joined in their activities.
The Council’s Cabinet Member with responsibility for sport Cllr David Dagger attended the session and said: “Hemsworth adiZone is a popular outdoor venue for people to stay fit and take part in sports and I’m pleased it has been visited by the London 2012 mascot Wenlock. The mascot helps inspire young people and connects them to sport and the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The pupils really enjoyed Monday’s event and I hope they will continue to take part in sport and healthy living.”
Headteacher of Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School Marilyn Morgan said: “The children have been researching the origins of the naming of the Olympic mascot as part of their classroom studies and were thrilled with the chance to meet him in person.”
The event was organised by Yorkshire Gold as part of the campaign to ensure the nation embraces the staging of the 2012 games in England.
