Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT) Statutory Induction

The LA supports all partners in the Statutory Induction process through monitoring, support and providing information about training relative to need.

The Statutory Induction period is designed to ensure that all Newly Qualified Teachers (NQTs) are supported throughout the first year of teaching after they have been awarded Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). It also contributes to their future professional and career development by building on a firm foundation in the early stages of teaching.

The induction period lasts for three consecutive school terms. NQTs must be allocated an 81% timetable as a result of National Remodelling Agenda requirements:-

  • Term one requires NQTs to successfully demonstrate that they are maintaining the QTS Standards.
  • By the end of term two they must demonstrate that they are working beyond QTS, and heading towards meeting Induction Standards.
  • In the final term they must be clearly meeting all the Induction Standards.

Based on the school’s termly assessments, if the NQT has successfully completed the Statutory Induction period, the LA, as Appropriate Body, will recommend to the General Teaching Council for England (GTCE) that they be permanently registered as teachers.  All teachers must complete the Statutory Induction successfully to continue teaching in a maintained school or non-maintained special school in England.

More information on NQT Statutory Induction can be accessed on the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) website (see 'Related Links')

Note: All NQTs must be registered with the Appropriate Body, the LA, within one week of the beginning of term, or within one week of their appointment, whichever is sooner. The link for registration and assessment documents can be found at the Wakefield Internet Learning Domain website (see 'Related Links')

Prior to the beginning of the induction period, NQTs should share their Career Entry Development Profile (CEDP) with their induction Coordinator and induction tutor/mentor by discussing their strengths and give prominence to their aspirations for the induction period.

This document should highlight training needs and will help the LAs to produce complementary INSET provision that responds accordingly.

The LA has established high quality and effective provision for NQTs over many years, based on the established needs of its cohort.  The schedule is designed to enhance and extend the Professional Studies Programme offered by schools and to allow NQTs to network with others in a similar situation.

The LA provision offers a Core programme with Complementary elements, based on the CEPD.  Two comprehensive handbooks, for NQTs and Heads/Tutors, have been developed which should answer most questions posed by for both groups.

In early September individual training needs will be collated based on an individual analysis that will allow us to provide a bespoke training programme for NQTs.  This together with Welcome Meetings (at the start of induction) and a choice of two NQT Conferences (at the end) offers excellent choice for the new teacher.
