The Wakefield Asylum Seeker Team is a member of the Yorkshire & Humberside Public Sector Group for asylum seekers and refugees. We are contracted with the Home Office as part of their dispersal programme to support and house asylum seekers in the Wakefield District.
Additionally, we support unaccompanied asylum seeker children who have made their way to Wakefield unofficially.
The predominant nationalities who have come to this area since 2000 are Kurdish Iraqi, Iranian, Albanian and Kosovan. More recently, we have received asylum seekers from African countries, such as Eritrea and Zimbabwe.
Each asylum seeker has a caseworker and monthly residency checks are completed on all our properties. There are close ties with the services for refugees.
The team includes staff from a range of backgrounds including Social Care, Housing, Education, Health and the Police.
