What information can you give me about my tenant’s claim?

A tenant does not have to tell you that they have claimed benefit. By law, the Council can only discuss a benefit claim with you if the tenant has given his or her permission for this to be done. Without this we cannot even confirm whether a claim has been made.

In the instance that payments of housing benefit are made to you (see ‘How is benefit paid?’) or consent is given, we can confirm:

  • Details relating to payments that have or will be sent to you
  • The period the payments are for
  • Details about any overpayments that we ask you to repay

We cannot discuss any personal details, such as income and wages.
