Overpayments of benefit

An overpayment is an amount of benefit we have paid to someone when they are not entitled to it.

There are different reasons that cause an overpayment. Typically, it is when your income has increased which has reduced the amount of benefit you are entitled to but have already been paid.

If you have been paid too much benefit, we will write to you. We will tell you have much you have been overpaid, the dates you were overpaid and how/from who this will be recovered.

How do you recover overpayments?

Overpayments of Council Tax Benefit are usually recovered through your Council Tax bill. You will receive an updated bill telling you how much you now need to pay.

You will receive a benefit decision notice telling you how much you have been overpaid.

This is not a bill.

If you have not received an updated bill soon after you have been informed of a benefit overpayment, contact our Revenues section on 0844 90 20 205
