Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) have been established to manage local healthcare services in the community. They ensure that local patients, doctors, nurses and other frontline staff are involved in developing and improving all healthcare services in the area.
The PCTs are responsible for the provision of community health services including GPs, district and community nurses, dentists and pharmacists, buying hospital services and improving the health in the local community.
