Who can get a Blue Badge?

You may be automatically eligible to apply for a badge if you are over two years old and meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • you receive the higher rate of the mobility component of Disability Living Allowance
  • you receive a War Pensioners' Mobility Supplement
  • you are registered blind.

You may also qualify for a badge if you are more than two years old and either:

  • a have a permanent and substantial disability which means they cannot walk, or which makes walking very difficult.
  • drive a motor vehicle regularly, have a severe disability in both arms, and are unable to operate all or some types of parking meter (or would find it very difficult to operate them).

If you don’t qualify under these rules you may still qualify under our discretionary rules.
We may have to do an assessment of your mobility difficulties. In this case we may contact you further about what is needed or ask for an assessment from your GP.

Special rules for children under two

A parent of a child who is less than two years old may apply for a badge for their child if the child has a specific medical condition which means that they:

  • must always be accompanied by bulky medical equipment which cannot be carried around without great difficulty; and/or
  • need to be kept near a vehicle at all times, so that they can, if necessary, be treated in the vehicle, or quickly driven to a place where they can be treated, such as a hospital.

Further information on this can be found in the Blue Badge scheme guidance on the Department for Transport's website.
