Disabled Parking (Blue Badge) FAQs

Q What is the Blue Badge scheme?
A

Wakefield Council’s Car Badge Unit can issue car-parking concessions (known as blue badges) to help people whose disability makes it impossible to visit shops, public buildings and other places unless they are allowed to park close to their destination.

The Blue Badge scheme is a national one for both drivers and passengers who have severe, permanent walking difficulties. It also applies to passengers who are registered blind and to people who drive a vehicle but have very severe disabilities affecting their arms and who cannot turn a steering wheel by hand.

Blue Badges can only be used in a vehicle when the person who it is allocated to is travelling.

Q Why should I apply for a Blue Badge?
A

If you have a Blue Badge you can benefit from a wide range of concessions relating to parking. These concessions are different in each town and city so you should always check the signs and notice’s – often found next to the pay and display machines- carefully before you park.

If you receive a Blue Badge we will send you a guide on using your Blue Badge that is written by the Department of Transport. This will give you more details about national concessions that apply to Blue Badge holders.

Q Who is eligible for a Blue Badge?
A

Who qualifies to receive a Blue Badge?

  • People who are registered blind.
  • People who have a permanent and substantial disability, which makes walking impossible or very difficult.
  • People who receive mobility allowance.
  • People who receive a war pensioner’s mobility supplement.
  • People on the higher rate of the Disability Living allowance.
  • Those who use a vehicle that is supplied by a government department.
  • Drivers whose disability means they are unable to turn a steering wheel by hand.
  • Parents of a disabled child over two and under 16 can apply for a badge on their child’s behalf
  • Parents of a disabled child under two with specific medical conditions.

If you don’t qualify under these rules you may still qualify under our discretionary rules.

  • Q Is it the same as an Orange badge?
    A

Yes. The orange badge scheme has been gradually phased out from January 2000. Those who now qualify will receive a new-style blue badge.

The reason for this is to standardise disabled parking badges across Europe. It will make it easier for disabled people living in the UK to use disabled parking scheme’s in other European countries.

Q How much does it cost?
    A

There is a £2 administration fee and you will also need to supply two passport sized photographs.

Q How long does the badge last for?
    A

The badges are issued for three years, after this time you need to re apply. We will send you a reminder about three months before it is due to expire.

Q How long does it take to get a Blue Badge?
    A

It usually takes no longer than 28 days to issue a badge from when we receive the completed application form and a form completed by your doctor if necessary.
