Short breaks

No descriptionShort Breaks, provided by the Home Based Break Service, give parents and carers the chance to have a break from caring.

The break aims to give parents the opportunity to do other things, spend time together or with their other children, or just to have a rest.  They give disabled children the chance to experience new things and have fun!

Breaks help children and young people to:-

  • develop their skills, abilities and independence,
  • make new friends
  • try something new.

Staff work closely with families to make sure their child is happy and enjoying their break.  To find out about the services provided by the Home Based Break Service, click on 'Types of Short Break' below.

To apply for a short break service, contact Social Care Direct and ask for an assessment.

Short Breaks Statement
From 1 October 2011, all councils are required to publish a Short Breaks Statement which provides information about the range of Short Breaks available in the District, the eligibility criteria, and how the services meet the needs of children with disabilities and their carers.  Please see 'Downloads' for a copy of the Short Breaks Statement.
