Carers are people who look after a friend or relative who manage at home without help because of physical or learning disability, mental illness or whose health is impaired by sickness or old age. This includes:

• parent carers of a disabled child and
• young carers looking after an older member of the family  

Wakefield Council, working with carers,  have developed a Carers Strategy for the Wakefield District (see 'Downloads' for a copy). Organisations are now working together to help carers, and develop work practices and services that support them. 

Carers assessment

If you care for someone you may be entitled to a Carers assessment. This assessment will focus on you as the carer and you may receive some support to help you with your caring role. The Council also work with Carers Wakefield and District to provide support and information for those people who are carers and for professionals who work with carers.
