Becoming a Shared Lives Carer

  • Do you think you could be a Shared Lives Carer?
  • Do you have a spare bedroom?
  • Could you provide overnight stays in your own home?
  • Or could you provide daytime support?

You do not need to have any qualifications but you need to have time, patience, understanding and commitment to help others.

The amount of time Shared Lives Carers offer is flexible and you will receive payment from Family Services whenever you have someone staying.

Shared Lives Carers are given training and support from the Shared Lives Team.

What kind of people are Shared Lives Carers?

Shared Lives Carers come from a variety of backgrounds and age groups.  They are ordinary people with the time, commitment and genuine desire to help others.

Carers can be single people living alone, couples or families who can offer our service users the privacy of their own bedroom and all the comforts of home.

The Shared Lives Scheme operates a careful assessment process for the recruitment of Shared Lives Carers who are given full training and ongoing support.

Shared Lives Carers receive a fee for the care they provide.  The amount they receive will depend on the needs of the person they are caring for and the type of care required.
