Continuing Care - Residential Homes for Older People

A care home can be a residential or nursing home or both. These homes can provide the personal help that people need 24 hours a day and seven days a week.

Woman in wheelchair with a carerSome homes cater for people with differing needs, for example older people over 65, people with dementia, older and younger people with physical disabilities and people with learning disabilities.

The best way to choose a home is to go and have a look around. A directory of homes - Care Home Directory and Guide - that Wakefield Council contracts with can be found under 'Downloads'.

Before entering a care home you or the person you care for will need to have been assessed as needing to move into one. For more information see 'Needs Assessment' under 'Related Links'.

  • How the council may assist you in entering a Care Home
  • How the council works out the contribution you might be asked to make towards your care costs

To check for current vacancies you can either use the directory of homes and ring them direct or you can contact your Social Worker or Care Co-ordinator for an up to date list or you can contact Social Care Direct.
