What can be put in your home compost bin

It's really important to have a good balance of green and brown waste.

A 50/50 mix of greens and browns is the perfect recipe for good compost.

Green

Quick to rot and provide important nitrogen and moisture:

  • Tea bags
  • Grass cuttings 
  • Fruit and vegetable peelings
  • Old flowers and plants
  • Coffee grounds and papers
  • Spent bedding plants
  • Rhubarb leaves
  • Young annual leaves (e.g. chickweed)
  • Apple core Tea bags    

    Brown

    Slower to rot and provides carbon and fibre and allows air pockets to form: 

  • Egg boxes
  • Cardboard
  • Toilet roll tubes
  • Scrunched up paper
  • Fallen leaves
  • Sawdust
  • Branches, twigs and bark 
    • Eggboxes  Leaves  

      Keep out

      Certain things should never be placed in your bin:

    • meat and fish remains
    • cooked vegetables
    • dairy products
    • dog poo or cat litter
    • vacuum cleaner contents
    • timber, plastic, glass, metal 
    • perennial weeds or diseased plants 
    • Cross
