Report noise nuisance online using the Noise Reporting Form

The Environmental Protection Team operates a call-out service (Night-time Noise Team) on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights between 8.00pm and 2.00am. The Team will respond to ongoing noise incidents such as, music, parties, house alarms, barking dogs etc.

It's best to try and resolve the problem early on by talking to whoever is responsible for the noise. It's also important to establish the facts - make a record of where the noise is coming from, at what time, and the reasons for it. Some local councils will give you a noise record sheet to note the problems.  Try visiting Noise Concern website (see Related Links)

Dealing with ongoing noise problems
The assessment of noise nuisance is based on whether it is 'reasonable', bearing in mind the locality, how often noise occurs and how many people are affected.

Initially we will try and resolve noise disputes through informal negotiation, but ultimately if we find that the noise is causing a nuisance to others then the Authority has a legal duty to take action against the person causing the noise.

When Officers assess if a noise is a nuisance, as well as considering the level of the noise, they will also have regard to other things such as:

  • How often the noise happens,
  • How long the noise lasts,
  • The time of day/night that the noise occurs.

Noise we do not investigate
We are generally unable to investigate complaints about normal road traffic, railways or aircraft.  However, if we can not help directly we will try to put you in touch with an organisation who can.

In addition normal, everyday activity - even if noisy - would not generally be considered to be a nuisance unless it was being carried on in some unreasonable way. This could include such things as:-

  • Mowing the garden through the day,
  • Using domestic appliances, such as hoovering, using washing machines etc., during the day,
  • Children playing or babies crying,
  • Doors banging.
