Cooling towers and evaporative condensers

In recent years there have been a number of outbreaks of Legionnaires' Disease associated with wet cooling systems (cooling towers and evaporative condensers), which have often resulted in serious cases of infection and fatalities.

It is because these wet cooling systems, if not properly maintained, pose the most serious risk that the Notification of Cooling Towers and Evaporative Condensers Regulations 1992 were introduced.

Notify and Apply online

The Regulations require you to notify in writing to the council if you have such a device operating on your premises.

Any changes to any information that has already been notified must be notified within one month after their occurrence. Similarly, where a device ceases to be, and is no longer intended to remain, a notifiable device that fact must be notified to the council concerned as soon as reasonably practicable after the cessation.

Target

The target for completing the notification or a change is 28 working days. Tacit consent is set at yes. This means that you will be able to act as though your application is granted if you have not heard from the local authority 28 working days following submission of a completed application.

Register

A register containing cooling tower information is currently held at Newton Bar, Leeds Road, Wakefield and is available to view during office opening hours.

Fee

There is no charge for the notification or to make a change to an existing notification.

Failed Application Redress

Please contact the council in the first instance.

Licence Holder Redress

Consumer Complaint

We would always advise that in the event of a complaint the first contact is made with the trader by you - preferably in the form a letter (with proof of delivery). If that has not worked, if you are located in the UK, Consumer Direct will give you advice. From outside the UK contact the UK European Consumer Centre.

Please contact us if you require further information.
