Grass cutting

The majority of grass cutting is done between mid March and early November.  Prior to cutting all litter and other debris is removed.

What we cut and how often

  • The majority of grass areas within the Authority receive a maximum of 16 cuts (about once a fortnight).  Any cuttings on paths or hard surfaces that represent a hazard are brushed or blown off and distributed over the grassed area.
  • Some sites receive an enhanced level of service where areas receive up to 32 cuts (about once a week), e.g. Parks, War Memorials, Town Centres.  However, the grass cuttings are not collected.
  • Areas where cuttings are collected e.g. around floral displays, crematoria, most public buildings and some town and city centre areas, receive up to 32 cuts (about once a week).
  • Rural verges receive 2 or 3 cuts depending on growth rates, with additional cuts at road junctions.
  • There are a number of variations to the above regimes where areas are cut between 2 and 9 occasions during the cutting season.  These depend on individual customer requirements, wildlife conservation issues or other factors.
  • Some areas receive specialist cutting such as bowling greens, cricket wickets and golf courses

Damage to grass areas and repair

If you see anyone causing damage to the Council's amenity grass please let us know.  These repairs incur unnecessary costs because in most cases they are the result of vandalism.

Repair to these areas takes place in either late Spring or early Autumn in accordance with best horticultural practice.  This ensures that any repaired area recovers quickly to its original state.
